In hospitality design, one of the greatest challenges is balancing global brand consistency with a strong sense of place. International hotel groups must deliver reliability and recognisable standards, while guests increasingly seek authentic, locally rooted experiences.
The Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit, completed in 2024, represents a powerful example of how these two objectives can coexist. Set in South Africa’s safari heartland and positioned as a gateway to the Kruger National Park, the hotel combines the assurance of a world renowned hospitality group with design that feels deeply connected to its surroundings.
For Cara Saven Wall Design, the project presented an opportunity to demonstrate how custom wallcoverings can bridge global hospitality expectations with local creative identity.
A Global Hospitality Brand Enters the Safari Landscape
The Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit marks a significant milestone for the Radisson Hotel Group — the brand’s first safari-focused hotel in South Africa. Designed with 138 rooms and suites, the property blends contemporary international hospitality standards with materials and colours inspired by the African landscape.
Located just outside Hoedspruit — often referred to as South Africa’s “Safari Capital” — the hotel sits within the Lowveld region, surrounded by private reserves and within easy reach of the Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon.
This positioning makes the hotel a key feeder destination for international travellers beginning their safari journeys — guests arriving with expectations shaped by global luxury hospitality, yet seeking an unmistakably African experience.
The design challenge was clear:
How do you maintain international brand standards while ensuring the interiors feel rooted in place rather than generic?
Creating Local Identity Through Wallcovering Design
Our role within the project focused on developing wallcoverings that would introduce authenticity and narrative into the guest experience.
Rather than importing a purely international aesthetic, the design approach centred on collaboration with a local South African artist, whose hand-painted artworks became the foundation for custom wallcoverings installed throughout all guest rooms.
These designs allowed each space to carry subtle references to the surrounding bushveld — texture, movement and tonal variation inspired by the natural environment — while still aligning with Radisson’s contemporary design language.
The result was a layered interior experience:
- International in comfort and execution
- Local in storytelling and artistic expression
- Cohesive across hundreds of rooms
Wallpaper became the medium through which global hospitality met regional identity.
Public Spaces: Extending the Narrative
While guest rooms featured bespoke artist-led designs, public areas throughout the hotel utilised curated selections from the Cara Saven Wall Design collection.
This approach ensured continuity while allowing different zones within the hotel to carry distinct atmospheres — from arrival spaces to shared social environments.
The goal was not visual dominance, but emotional grounding: interiors that feel connected to landscape, culture and journey.
In a destination where guests transition between wilderness and comfort, design plays a critical psychological role. Wallcoverings helped soften this transition, creating interiors that feel warm, tactile and contextual rather than purely architectural.
Performance Matters: Introducing Vividtex Hospitality Wallcovering
Large-scale hospitality projects demand more than aesthetic success. Durability, maintenance and longevity are equally critical.
For the Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit, all installations were produced using Vividtex, Cara Saven Wall Design’s Type 2 hospitality-grade wallcovering.
Vividtex was selected specifically for its performance characteristics:
- Scratch-resistant surface suitable for high-traffic environments
- Cleanable and maintenance-friendly finish
- Commercial durability aligned with international hotel standards
- Long-term visual consistency across multiple rooms and public areas
In hospitality environments operating year-round with international guest turnover, materials must withstand constant use without compromising design intent.
Vividtex allowed the project to achieve both.
Designing for Scale Without Losing Character
One of the defining aspects of the Radisson Hoedspruit project was scale.
Unlike boutique hotels where every room can differ dramatically, international hospitality brands require consistency across large room counts. Yet consistency should never mean uniformity without personality.
By translating hand-painted artwork into repeatable wallcovering systems, the project achieved:
- Efficiency in production and installation
- Cohesive brand experience
- Preservation of artistic authenticity
This balance is central to modern hospitality design — creating environments that feel bespoke even when delivered at scale.
Hoedspruit: Where Destination Shapes Design
Hoedspruit itself plays a critical role in the hotel’s identity. Surrounded by wildlife reserves and positioned near one of Africa’s most iconic national parks, the town serves as a starting point for safari experiences defined by nature, movement and discovery.
Guests arrive anticipating connection — to landscape, wildlife and culture. Interior design therefore becomes an extension of destination storytelling.
By integrating locally inspired artwork and tactile wallcoverings, the Radisson Safari Hotel reinforces its geographic context rather than separating guests from it.
A Model for Contemporary Hospitality Design
The Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit demonstrates a broader shift within global hospitality:
International brands are no longer seeking uniform interiors across destinations. Instead, they are investing in locally grounded design that enhances authenticity while maintaining operational consistency.
For Cara Saven Wall Design, the project reflects a core philosophy:
Great hospitality design happens when global standards meet local creativity.
Through artist collaboration, performance-driven materials and scalable custom production, wallcoverings became a tool for translating place into experience.
